Introduction to Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a commercial spreadsheet application, written and distributed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. At the time of writing this tutorial the Microsoft excel version was 2010 for Microsoft Windows and 2011 for Mac OS X.
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet tool capable of performing calculations, analyzing data and integrating information from different programs.
By default, documents saved in Excel 2010 are saved with the .xlsx extension whereas the file extension of the prior Excel versions are .xls.

Introduction to Microsoft Word

Microsoft Office Word 2010 allows you to create and edit personal and business documents, such as letters, reports, invoices, emails and books.
By default, documents saved in Word 2010 are saved with the .docx extension. Microsoft Word can be used for the following purposes:

  • To create business documents having various graphics including pictures, charts, and diagrams.
  • To store and reuse ready-made content and formatted elements such as cover pages and sidebars.
  • To create letters and letterheads for personal and business purpose.
  • To design different documents such as resumes or invitation cards etc.
  • To create a range of correspondence from a simple office memo to legal copies and reference documents.

What is Ms-Office?

Microsoft Office is an office suite of applications, servers, and services developed by Microsoft. It was first announced by Bill Gates on 1 August 1988, at COMDEX in Las Vegas. Initially a marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, OLE data integration and Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand. On 10 July 2012, Softpedia reported that Office is used by over a billion people worldwide.
